Kurt Stamm, "Story and the Art of Theatre" panelist at SATE '11 Orlando
KURT STAMM – Kurt has been directing and choreographing professionally for the past fifteen years, prior to which he was a performer. Off Broadway, Kurt will be directing and choreographing Closer Than Ever (upcoming 20th Anniversary Production), and has directed and choreographed Our Sinatra (2000 M.A.C. Award, Best Musical Review), Below the Valley of the Dolls, and Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love. He also choreographed They Wrote That, The Song of Man and Weil with his good friend and mentor, Richard Maltby, Jr. Kurt also directed the national tour of Leader of the Pack starring Mary Wilson of the Supremes, as well as three national tours of his Off Broadway hit, Our Sinatra. Regionally, he’s directed and choreographed Chicago, Baby, Little Shop of Horrors, Anything Goes, Guys & Dolls, West Side Story, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The World Goes ‘Round, Anything Goes, Oklahoma, Damn Yankees, and Starting Here, Starting Now (to name a few). On Broadway, Kurt was the Associate Director of Fosse (1999 Tony Award, Best Musical) and also the Associate Director of The American Songbook Series at Lincoln Center. He was also the associate director and choreographer for Stage Blue, a production commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Yale Dramatic Association and 75th Anniversary of the Yale School of Drama. Kurt is the founder and current Artistic Director of Mason Street Warehouse (MSW), a professional theatre located in the resort town of Saugatuck on scenic Lake Michigan. For MSW he has directed and/or choreographed Dirty Blonde, Our Sinatra, Smokey Joe’s Café, Bright Ideas, The Thing About Men, Honky Tonk Highway, Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love, Cabaret, Altar Boyz, Lucky Stiff, Das Barbecu, Evita, Ain’t Misbehavin’ (with Richard Maltby, Jr.), The Full Monty, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Marvelous Wonderettes. In 2011, He will direct and choreograph the hit musical Chicago as well as direct the hilarious new play The 39 Steps. His corporate/industrial clients include Lowes Home Improvement, Turner Network’s truTV, ThyssenKrupp Steel, Pfizer, The College Board, Rite Aide, Cadillac, Kodak, CNN and Group Sales Box Office. He has also produced and/or directed benefits starring Maureen McGover, Sutton Foster, Bea Arthur, Michele Lee, Conan O’Brien, Mia Farrow and Ann Hampton Callaway to name a few. Kurt is a Cum Laud Graduate of the University of Utah.
